I’m a science geek as well as a Buddhist geek, and recently when I was leading a retreat on how to bring more joy into our lives I found myself making a lot of references to an article published in Yes magazine, which touched on ten things that have been shown by science to make us happier. Grandmother Wisdom: Lessons on Life from Gladys on her 98th Birthday
You may or may not know that this website is not only dedicated to delivering ‘gladness’ but it’s also named after an amazing woman, my grandmother Gladys, who is celebrating her 98th birthday today. I can tell you, for certain, that this woman knows how to live, and today is a tribute to her, and her strength and wisdom.
Gladys spent most of her life on farms. She had to milk the cows before she went to elementary school, even in the dark cold winter in Wisconsin. On frozen winter mornings, she sometimes stood in fresh cow manure to keep her feet warm. Read more
We are All Running From Crazy
My usual sign-off with my brothers is something like, “If you go wackadoo on me, I’m getting on a plane to kick your butt.” After watching many members of our family check out from daily life through different kinds of substance addictions, nervous breakdowns or mental disorders, and even escaping into religious obsession, we feel we need to check each other’s stuff, make sure we’re still all here. You never know, in my family, you could wake up crazy (or at least numb.) My own journey to the mindful life sprang from observing those around me check out. Read more
